Chapter Ten

Autumn woke feeling depressed. It took what felt like forever to get out of bed. When she managed to get dressed and downstairs, she found she was alone. It wasn’t uncommon for Cage to get up before her but he wasn’t anywhere in the apartment. She wandered about for the first time and managed to scrounge up some breakfast. She sat by the window and when she was finished she stared out for a little while, thinking of yesterday.

Eventually she got up and washed her dishes. She put everything back where it was and then sat on the couch. She assumed Fredric or someone would eventually come get her but after more than an hour she decided to do some more exploring outside the apartment.

She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to. Usually she was locked in but when she got up and checked the door it was unlocked. She took a deep breath and went out into the hall. She wondered if Cage was still mad at her, if he’d glare at her or not even look at her. She bit her lip and took in all the doors, wondering if each of them was an apartment or something else.

She knew when Cage stayed somewhere he often modified the entire building, sometimes even the surrounding ones, to meet his needs. She looked at the doors and debated knocking on one of them when suddenly the elevator opened. Autumn froze and saw several guards carrying boxes step out. They took notice of her but continued on their way. She watched them walk to the end of the hall and go through two double doors.

She had a feeling that was where she would find Cage. She quickly followed after them and quietly stepped into the room. While the hallway had been quiet and empty, this room was full of activity. Men moved about doing various tasks. The walls were lined with charts, maps, and other various paperwork. Autumn found she could read and mostly understand everything she saw for once.

It was nice having an idea of what was going on. She saw territories and potential targets. She did her best to stay out of the way as she glanced over them. After a minute her attention turned to an area that had been sectioned off by a glass wall and door.

There was a long table. Cage sat at one end, with Fredric at his back. Lane was also sitting at the table. A man was standing and talking to them. They all appeared to be listening intently. The lights in the room suddenly dimmed and a video was projected onto the wall. Autumn moved slowly, quietly approaching the room. She pulled on the glass door, finding it unlocked. She quickly slid into the room and found it was soundproof. She slid into a seat at the table and began listening.

“We’ve been close on more than one occasion but up until now they’ve eluded us. However, we believe we finally have succeeded in capturing a visual of the mole.
